Psalm 119:13-16

With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.  I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

  • Words that stand out: “recount”, “rejoice”, “meditate”, “delight”

  • “as one rejoices in great riches”

  • We see that the author of the Psalm recognizes a supreme importance of the Word of God and direct impact on life

One of the major themes that we see throughout Psalm 119 is complete devotion to God and his word. The author of the Psalm recognizes the direct impact of God’s faithfulness and God’s promises in life. We also see the importance of faith and actively pursuing God’s Word. Firstly, we see that that the author “recounts” the laws that come from God’s mouth. I picture this as babies learn to speak from their mom and dad. Parents come close to their child’s face and make eye contact. Then slowly and patiently begin to repeat the words they want to teach. It is amazing watching a baby try so hard to move their lips and form their mouths just as their mom and dad are doing. Their attention is focused. What if our attention was just as focused on our Heavenly Father’s words to us through scripture? The author of the Psalm rejoices in obedience to God’s truths as somebody might rejoice in great riches. He understands that the truth that God reveals in his Word is of such surpassing value that his life is consumed by it. He meditates on it, considers it, delights in it, and refuses to neglect it’s power. What would our lives look if we approached God’s Word in the same way?

You are good and faithful in all Your ways. I pray that my heart would trust that truth always. Help me to see and approach Your Word as the incredible riches that it is. Give me the passion to delight in, meditate on, and rejoice in Your Word always. Amen.
